University at Buffalo Dr. Donald Hickey has been awarded a federal government patent for a medical device that can help physicians effectively determine how best to treat cardiovascular disease.

State University of New York officials noted this is the 11th patent issued for SUNY research related to the Hickey Cardiac Monitory System.

The device uses a catheter and balloon, inserted into the esophagus, adjacent to the aortic arch, to sense aortic pressure.

"Physicians need real-time cardiac measurements to effectively determine a course of treatment for many patients with cardiovascular disease," said Hickey, a research assistant professor of physiology and biophysics and clinical assistant professor of neurosurgery.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of Americans, claiming close to one million lives each year. Its also estimated cardiovascular disease will cost the nation $330 billion in 2002.
